OCA Archivist to present 2017 St. Alexis Lecture at Minneapolis cathedral

MINNEAPOLIS, MN [MW Diocese Communications] — Alexis Liberovsky, Archivist of the Orthodox Church in America, will deliver the 2017 Saint Alexis [Toth] Lecture at Saint Mary Cathedral here at 7:00 p.m. on Saturday, May 6.

According to Archpriest Andrew Morbey, cathedral Dean, Mr. Liberovsky’s topic will be “Metropolitan Leonty (Turkevich): The Minneapolis Connection.”  A reception will follow in the parish center.

Born in Volhynia in 1876 and ordained in 1905, the future Metropolitan Leonty — Father Leonid Turkevich — was appointed rector of the newly opened theological seminary and pastor of Saint Mary Church by Saint Archbishop Tikhon of the Aleutians and North America in August 1906.  On October 27 of the same year, Father Leonid and his wife Anna arrived in Minnesota, where he immediately devoted himself to the formation of the future pastors for the North American flock and shepherding the parish that had been brought into Orthodoxy some 15 years earlier by Saint Alexis Toth.  He ministered in Minneapolis until 1912, when the seminary was moved to New Jersey.  Elected Metropolitan at the Eighth All-American Sobor in December 1950, he fell asleep in the Lord in May 1965 and is interred at Saint Tikhon’s Monastery, South Canaan, PA.
